This dramatic icon from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope shows the planetary nebula NGC 3918, a brilliant cloud of colorful gas inwards the constellation of Centaurus, merely about 4,900 light-years from Earth.

NGC 3918's distinctive eye-like shape, with a brilliant inner trounce of gas as well as a to a greater extent than diffuse outer trounce that extends far from the nebula, looks every bit if it could last the consequence of 2 split ejections of gas. But this is inwards fact non the case: studies of the object propose that they were formed at the same time, but are beingness blown from the star at dissimilar speeds. The powerful jets of gas emerging from the ends of the large construction are estimated to last shooting away from the star at speeds of upwardly to 217,500 miles (350,000 kilometers) per hour.
By the standards of astronomical phenomena, planetary nebulas similar NGC 3918 are rattling short-lived, with a lifespan of merely a few tens of thousands of years.
The icon is a composite of visible as well as near-infrared snapshots taken with Hubble's Wide Field as well as Planetary Camera 2.
